Bengal Was Rational Long Before It Was Religious

Whenever a freethinker in Bangladesh questions religious dogma, the immediate rebuttal is predictable: "You are brainwashed by Western ideas." This argument completely ignores our own regional history.

Long before modern internet blogs existed, the Bengal Delta was a cauldron of radical skepticism. Think of the 19th-century Bengal Renaissance, Henry Derozio and his Young Bengal movement questioning every social orthodoxy of their day. Look at the Bauls and Lalon Shah, who rejected institutional religion, caste, and holy texts in favor of humanism and inner inquiry. Skepticism isn't an imported luxury—it is deeply rooted in Bengali heritage. Questioning authority is as native to this land as the Padma River.
